Chicago’s mayor touted his city on the first night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention

On the first night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson welcomed convention guests by saying that Chicago is the greatest city in the world.

“This city of hard work and caring people is where Democrats will celebrate President Joe Biden and nominate Kamala Harris for President of the United States of America,” Johnson said.

Johnson said Vice President Kamala Harris would help families get ahead if she is elected president.

“It will take someone with toughness to stand up for us, and let me tell you America, Kamala’s got it,” Johnson stated.

On the first night of DNC speeches at the United Center, Johnson expressed strong support for the Democrats’ presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“As a Black man raising a little Black girl on the West Side of Chicago, I know that my daughter Braedyn will see not only a reflection of herself in the White House, but she will experience the deepest part of American values,” Johnson said.

The mayor also praised Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Illinois Republicans released a statement titled, “DNC Chaos Day One.”

According to the Illinois GOP, President Joe Biden will be out of a job in January after Democrats “launched a soft coup to remove him from office and appoint Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the party, despite the fact she has never received a single vote outside of California.”

Illinois Republican Party Chair Kathy Salvi said, “Americans know that under the last four years, they are worse off amid rising prices, a wide-open southern border and extreme, radical policies from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

Cardinal Blaise Cupich of the Archdiocese of Chicago led the opening prayer at the convention.
