A Knox County judge was set Thursday to rule on a request by prosecutors to keep a Galesburg man charged with murder locked up until trial.
But, instead, the judge delayed the hearing for Christopher Alfaro, 27, until Friday at 12:00 p.m.
Alfaro says he’s trying to hire a private attorney, and it was learned he would not meet with public defenders Thursday morning.
Alfaro faces a First Degree Murder charge along with a count of Aggravated Battery, after allegedly shooting and killing Heath Williams, Sr., 47, Saturday night in the 1400 block of Moshier Avenue.
An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday, and Knox County Sheriffs Deputies arrested him not long after.
Under the state’s Pretrial Fairness Act, suspects arrested for a crime have to be seen by a judge within 72 hours of their arrest for detention purposes. Generally, however, court is not in session on weekends. Alfaro will remain jailed until the issue of his detention is ruled upon.
