Work is getting closer to completed on some big construction projects in the Abingdon-Avon School District.
For one, the conversion of the old Avon High School into a district-wide middle school, essentially gutting the old school and making it new again.
District Superintendent Bill Walters tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL it was more cost effective than building a new building.
“They just don’t make [school buildings] like they used to,” said Walters. “This is a building we were able to get gutted and redone, all new…pretty much new everything except the walls for about $7 million. A new building would have cost us over 20 (million dollars).”
Walters says that work should be done by the end of the year, with some student use already taking place.
Also, he says the district is building a cafeteria/gymnasium, as well as a library at Hedding Grade School in Abingdon.
“Hedding hasn’t had a library for quite some time,” said Walters. “It is our biggest attendance center, so we needed to get a library there.”
Walters says that work should also be done by December. He says another use for the cafeteria/gymnasium will be to act as a storm shelter for the public, should one be needed.
The cost of that project isn’t available.
