There are already a few electric vehicle charging stations in Knox County, one planned by the City of Galesburg, and now more are on the way in the county.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is doling out more than $25 million in federal money being awarded to those putting up EV chargers statewide.
It’s through the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program. And one of those awards is going to the Love’s Travel Stop in Knoxville at Interstate 74.
The station is getting $782,000 that will pay for a six-port charging area.
Most of the grant awardees will build either four-port or six-port stations.
“We’re proud of our work to make Gov. Pritzker’s electric vehicle goals a reality,” said Omer Osman of Peoria, IDOT Secretary, in a news release. “This round of funding will bring new life to those efforts in communities large and small, further positioning Illinois as a leader in the growth of electric vehicles. Under Gov. Pritzker, IDOT is committed to providing the public with safe, reliable options on how they wish to travel. Building EV infrastructure also creates new economic opportunities throughout the state.”
Several Love’s stations elsewhere in Illinois will be getting grants to build similar stations, along with private companies building them for other places like hotels and other gas stations.
The Love’s in Knoxville is one of 37 projects chosen for money. It was chosen in part because of its proximity to Interstate 74.
