A concert will be held at the site of the former OT Johnson store in downtown Galesburg — a sign of what the show’s organizer says is a hope of things to come.
After a test run last year, the Downtown Community Partnership will host what it’s calling another “pop-up concert” at the site Friday starting at 5:00 p.m., featuring two “eclectic bands.” Admission is $5; and while alcohol will be for sale along with snacks, it’s described as an all-ages show.
The partnership’s Kate Bullis tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL she’d like to see that site — which she’s calling “The Railyard” — blossom into a permanent venue.
“Luckily, with the support of the Downtown Community Partnership, and then local organizations and businesses, we’ve really kind of been able to start developing that idea out a little bit more,” said Bullis. “If you come to the concert Friday night, you will get to see some sketches of some ideas we have going for the space.”
Ideas, which Bullis says includes simple things like people sitting and watching at the top of the sort-of hill that’s there, and bands performing at the bottom.
But in order for the space to become a more permanent venue, Bullis says it’s going to take some help.
“Ideally, we would see a split of the project between the City of Galesburg, the State of Illinois, and then fundraising,” said Bullis. “There’s a few steps that have to happen before we can really dive in to those fundraising endeavors.”
While Bullis says you may hear the concert throughout downtown Galesburg, the space in-between the two buildings deadens the sound from going much farther.
