The Macomb man who allegedly shot at police officers earlier this month causing a 19-hour standoff has entered his first plea in the case.

Shaiking Mathis, 38, was in McDonough County Court for a preliminary hearing Monday afternoon; where, after a judge found probable cause for Mathis to be tried, his attorney Michael Jarard entered a not guilty plea and asked for a trial by jury.

Mathis faces charges of Aggravated Battery of a Police Officer, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

Mathis allegedly shot at two Macomb Police officers trying to serve a warrant in a sexual assault investigation September 5th, causing the standoff utilizing a number of police agencies including Macomb and Galesburg Police, McDonough and Knox County Sheriffs Deputies, Illinois State Police, the FBI, and others.

The two officers first injured are now recovering at home.

Meanwhile, Mathis will be back in court October 29th for a pre-trial hearing, and continues to be held in the McDonough County Jail.
