Authorities warn of potential election scam involving text messages

If you’ve received a text message claiming you can vote in the November election by text message, don’t believe it.

That’s according to police in Canton.

Authorities say a number of local residents there, at least, have received text messages, likely from unknown numbers, encouraging them to vote in the Presidential election via text message.

Fulton County Clerk and Recorder Patrick O’Brian tells police, as you may know already, that there are only three ways to vote: early in-person at the courthouse, by mail, and at the polls on Election Day.

Chances are, any link you receive about voting from text message could be a phishing scam.

In Knox County. clerk Scott Erickson told WGIL last week that he’d be skeptical of any sort of vote-by-internet methods as they’re developed, given how difficult it’s been to secure the internet.

Erickson does say military members do have a mechanism do vote electronically, if they’re serving overseas.
