Billy B. Self Sr.

Billy B. Self Sr., 86, of Galesburg, passed peacefully at home with his family at his side on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. 

Billy was born on August 13, 1938, in La Plata, Missouri. He was the son of Otha J. and Opal (Spence) Self. Billy married Donna Culbertson on October 23, 1959. Later, he married Carol Machin on February 9, 1968, she preceded him in death on July 19, 1995. Billy and Donna remarried in 1998. Surviving Billy are his wife, Donna, at home; children, Laura (Mike) Chapin of Abingdon, Tina (Rich) Strom of Oak Run, Terri (Joe) Tuthill of Knoxville and Jerald (Laura) Ryan of Tucson, AZ; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Jay (Janet) Self; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Craig Self and Billy B. “Butch” Self, Jr. and siblings, Jean, Laura Lou and Jim. 

Billy was a graduate of La Plata High School. He worked as a mechanic for the coal mines for over 25 years, retiring in 1996. He also worked at a Chevy dealership where he was a mechanic and painted cars. He was a member of the Williamsfield United Methodist Church. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, carpentry and going to the casino. He loved baseball, from coaching little league to playing catcher on his team in the Williamsfield League. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved classic cars. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, and was always good for a great one-liner or some playful witty banter. 

Cremation rites have been accorded. A visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Friday, November 8, 2024, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory, Knoxville. Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Williamsfield Cemetery. Rev. Jordan Knight will officiate. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory, Knoxville are assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be donated to the National Coalition of Black Lung & Respiratory Disease Clinics.
