A construction project is visibly underway at the Hy-Vee grocery store on East Main Street in Galesburg, prompting a WGIL follower to ask:

Question: Any idea what’s happening in front of East Main Hy-Vee?

WGIL turned to Steve Gugliotta, director of Community Development for the City of Galesburg, who said 12 Tesla EV Supercharger posts are being installed in the parking lot at Hy-Vee, 2030 E. Main St. in Galesburg.

The charging posts will be located at the northeast portion of the parking lot near the intersection of Main Street and Michigan Avenue.

The city issued electrical permits for the project on Jan. 30 to Marshall Electric Inc., which is involved with the installation.

“Travelers on I-74 with electric vehicles (EV) will have an easily accessible option to stop in Galesburg and charge, potentially shopping, dining or using services while their vehicle charges,” Gugliotta said. “This also increases charging options available to existing area residents with electric vehicles.

“As EV adoption grows, having such infrastructure in place makes the community more attractive and appealing to eco-conscious consumers.”

Nola Aigner Davis, senior communications manager for Hy-Vee, tells WGIL, “Depending on weather conditions and electric utility timelines, the stations will be ready to use in late spring.”

The charging stations will be owned and operated by Telsa. According to the Hy-Vee spokesperson, nearly all non-Tesla EVs should be able to use the chargers once the adapters are delivered.

With 60,000 plus Superchargers, Tesla says that it owns and operates the largest global, fast charging network in the world. Superchargers can add up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

The nearest Tesla Superchargers are at Hy-Vee at 4125 N. Sheridan Road in Peoria, and the Hy-Vee at 4064 E. 53rd St. in Davenport.

The soon-to-be-constructed Simmons Street Parking Lot and Streetscape project also will including an EV charging station.  The EV charging station will be located at the southeast corner of the Simmons Street parking lot.
