More than 200 people gathered Sunday in Galesburg for what organizers called a rally for democracy.
It marked the second consecutive Sunday citizens demonstrated in a vacant city lot at the corner of Chestnut and East Main streets across from Hy-Vee. Organizers received pre-authorization to gather for both events from the city of Galesburg.
Most of the demonstrators displayed a variety of signs and voiced chants of displeasure about actions being taken by the new presidential administration. About five counter-protesters—some carrying Donald Trump flags—stood across Main Street from the group, returning chants against the rally goers.
While the rally appeared peaceful, several Galesburg Police Department officers were on scene during the demonstration, which lasted from noon until 1 p.m.
A Facebook post by the citizen group organizing the demonstration stated in its invitation, “There is clearly a great concern and anger here in Knox County at what is happening in Washington.
“If you’re worried about the current threat to our democracy and our constitution, please come out to show your concern and support. Bring your voice and your signs.”
More than 120 people gathered at the same location March 2 with signs, chants and singing.
