A Galesburg community service organization is planning a series of events to raise awareness of those impacted by dementia.
VNA Community Services will launch the efforts locally with a special kickoff event—Lighting the Way: Galesburg’s Dementia Friendly Future—set for 5-8 p.m. May 2 at The Kensington Ballroom in Galesburg. This initiative, in partnership with Dementia Friendly America, is dedicated to making Galesburg a more understanding, inclusive, and supportive community for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
The Lighting the Way kickoff event is an open invitation to the public—no RSVP required. Attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about the Dementia Friendly Galesburg initiative and how it will positively impact the community.
- Connect with local organizations, businesses, and advocates dedicated to dementia awareness and support.
- Discover practical ways to contribute to a more dementia-friendly Galesburg.
- Enjoy food and drinks in a welcoming environment designed to foster conversation and collaboration.
In addition to unveiling the initiative, Dementia Friendly Galesburg will introduce key community partners and Dementia Champions—advocates committed to spreading awareness, providing education, and supporting caregivers and those living with dementia. Attendees also willhave access to informational materials, including a caregiver card featuring a QR code linking to the Dementia Friendly Galesburg section of VNA’s website.
Local businesses, faith organizations, and community members interested in becoming Dementia Friendly Partners are encouraged to participate. By joining the movement, partners commit to raising awareness, educating staff and members, and implementing small but impactful changes to create a more dementia-inclusive community.
“We are thrilled to bring this movement to Galesburg. Dementia affects so many families, and our goal is to ensure that those living with it—and their caregivers—feel valued, understood, and supported,” said Michael Bennett, Executive Director of VNA Community Services and initiator of Dementia Friendly Galesburg.
“This event is just the beginning of something truly transformative for our community.”
Dementia Friendly Galesburg is part of the broader Dementia Friendly America network, a nationwide movement committed to equipping communities with the tools and knowledge to better serve those living with dementia. More information about the initiative will be available at the event and on VNA Community Services’ website upon its launch.
