UPDATE: This story has been updated with the status of the Walgreens in Monmouth.
Galesburg’s two Walgreens stores, along with the one in Monmouth, will remain open despite the drugstore chain closing hundreds of locations across the country as part of its turnaround plan.
Brigid Sweeney, senior manager of Media Relations & Issues Management for Walgreens, told WGIL on Tuesday via email, “There are no plans to close the two stores in Galesburg.”
Walgreens operates stores at 844 E. Fremont St. and 1057 E. Main St. in Galesburg.
Sweeney also confirmed there are no plans to close the store at 600 E. Main St. in Monmouth.
Walgreens announced in October that it was planning to close around 1,200 locations, as the drugstore chain and its rivals struggle to define their role for U.S. shoppers who no longer look to them first for convenience. The company said it will start by closing about 500 stores in fiscal year 2025, which ends Aug. 25.
Sweeney confirmed the store at 1805 N. Brady St., in Davenport, Iowa, closed nearly a year ago, in April 2024. The store at 2515 Knoxville Ave., Peoria, closed in January 2025. And the pharmacy at the Moline store is temporarily closed but the store remains open.
