Mayor Peter Schwartzman will lead Galesburg for another four years.

The incumbent defeated former two-term mayor John Pritchard in Tuesday’s consolidated election. It was a rematch of the 2021 Galesburg mayoral race, also won by Schwartzman.

Schwartzman, professor of Environmental Studies at Knox College, defeated Pritchard 2,831-2,455 on Tuesday.

Pritchard — the president of Galesburg Broadcasting Company, which includes WGIL Radio — served two terms as Galesburg mayor from 2013-21 before losing to Schwartzman in 2021.

Schwartzman will join Galesburg’s Morning News at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday on WGIL and wgil.com to discuss his victory.

There will be two new faces on the Galesburg City Council.

Incumbent Dwight White held on to his seat in Ward 4, defeating Corine Andersen 165-106.

In Ward 2, challenger Wendell Hunigan defeated incumbent Wayne Dennis 308-201.

And in Ward 6 where Sarah Carrington did not seek re-election, Greg Saul emerged the winner with 504 votes, followed by Tianna Cervantez with 342 and Demarkius Medley with 88.

Incumbent Kimberly Thierry won her bid for re-election as City of Galesburg Township Supervisor, defeating challenger Jennifer Frederick 2,983-2,146.

City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz and Township Assessor Laura E. Williams ran unopposed Tuesday.

Newly-elected city officials will be sworn May 5 at the Galesburg City Council meeting. The current Council will start the meeting in order to approve the minutes and give any outgoing remarks.  A judge will then swear in the mayor, new City Council members, the city clerk, township supervisor and assessor. The new Council will then finish out the meeting.
