HEGELER, Ill. (AP) — Residents near the former Hegeler Zinc plant in Vermilion County will get a look at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to clean up decades-old contamination.
The (Danville) Commercial-News reports public meetings will be held Tuesday at the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville.
The EPA says there will be no formal presentation, but residents may ask questions.
The 100-acre Superfund site, about 3 miles south of Danville, is contaminated with lead, arsenic, cadmium, and zinc from smelting operations that began in 1907 and continued until about 1955.
Officials fenced off the site in 2003, and named it to the National Priorities List in 2005.
The first phase of cleanup will begin in September, with removal of contaminated soil from residential areas.
