Illinois lawmaker wants panel to look at fantasy sports

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois lawmaker wants a special committee to investigate daily fantasy sports betting after Attorney General Lisa Madigan said last month the contests are illegal.
Democratic state Rep. Scott Drury of Highwood requested the committee Monday in a letter to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Highwood wants the committee to hold hearings and be able to subpoena documents and take testimony under oath.

Drury says the committee is needed so lawmakers can make informed decisions about any state legislation addressing fantasy sports betting.

After the attorney general’s determination, Boston-based DraftKings and New York-based FanDuel filed separate lawsuits challenging her decision. Nevada and New York have also deemed the fantasy sports contests to be illegal.
