JOLIET, Ill. (AP) – An apparent gang-related shootout in Joliet ended with a 2-year-old boy shot in the leg and his parents facing criminal charges.
Joliet Police tell the (Joliet) Herald News that the shootout happened Tuesday evening. They say Vanessa Casilla told police that her family was in their driveway when the passenger in a passing car opened fire, striking her son.
Police say that Casilla, who has a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, told officers that she returned fire. But they say their investigation revealed that the child’s father, Roberto I. Ortiz, had fired the weapon and Casilla allegedly lied because Ortiz does not have a FOID card. Casilla was charged with obstruction of justice and other charges. Ortiz is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and other gun charges.
