Mathilda “Tillie” Mangieri, 97 of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 3:22 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.She was born November 22, 1921 in Osceola, Michigan the daughter of Josef and Mary (Babich) Matzelle. She married Samuel F. Mangieri on May 26, 1945 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Henry, Josephine, Mary, Frances, Joseph, George, Albert and Dorothy, and one great-granddaughter, Josephine Faye Mangieri.
Tillie is survived by seven daughters, Mary (and George) Burgland of Galesburg, Carol (and Steve) Ekdahl of Flagstaff, Arizona, Jane (and R. Max) Mayer of Batavia, Christine (and Tom) Vujovich of Columbus, Indiana, Monica (and Bert) Coghill of Orland Park, Rose (and Ken) Egidi of Glenview and Nancy (and Rick) Johnson of Fountain Hills, Arizona; five sons, Samuel F. (Peggy) Mangieri Jr. of Lake Bracken, John (and Cindy) Mangieri of Davenport, Iowa, Peter (and Teresa) Mangieri of Peoria, Joseph (and Gayle) Mangieri of Galesburg and Mark (and Theresa) Mangieri of Galesburg; 34 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tillie was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon and was a member and past president of the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member and past president of the Abingdon Jr. Women’s Club, member and past president of OSF St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary, board member of OSF St. Mary Medical Center Foundation, served the City of Abingdon as an Alderman (Alderperson), member of Chapter BB of the PEO Sisterhood, a recipient of the Papal Medal for outstanding leadership as a lay minister and volunteer in the Catholic Church and Diocesan Deanary, a board member of the VNA (Visiting Nurse Association, and a board member of WIAAA (Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging.
Visitation will be 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 506 N. Main St. in Abingdon. Praying of the Rosary will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the church followed by the Funeral Mass. Rev. William Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
