Construction work continues in A-Town School District

Work is continuing to move along in the Abingdon-Avon School District on various construction projects, albeit a little slowly.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry says that raw materials and weather have played a part in slowing down the construction work at several projects in the district.

“I bet if you called anybody doing any kind of project, everything is behind slightly. Roof installation has been a stickler but we finely received that. So the roof project in Avon is kicking off. The flooring project [at the high school] will be put off until next summer. The rain pushed back the building of the walls to enclose the Pre-K addition [at Hedding Grade School], set that back a week or two.”

Curry tells WGIL that with so many different building projects going on right now, building materials are difficult to acquire.

In some other action, board members were deadlocked on a bid to replace the high school gym bleachers.

Superintendent Curry says that with a member who intended to vote yes absent, the board was deadlocked 3-3 on approving the bid.

“It most likely will come back next month. But, it just puts the project back a month. We’ll get to a resolution… we’ll get those new bleachers in.”

Additionally, the board tabled a bid for an air purification system because of the wide discrepancy in bids.

Curry says that the bids ranged from the low side of $100,000 to $60,000.

“We’re not saying there’s anything wrong with the $60,000 bid but I want the architects to approve all the products that were a part of that bid. So, we just tabled it for now. We’ll either find out the good news and we’ll probably accept a bid next month or we’ll go back to the drawing board with a more detailed bid spec.”

The board did approve the purchase of concrete change orders, expanding new concrete at the playground at Hedding and adding a new sidewalk at Avon Elementary.
