Juvenile attack leaves staff members injured at Mary Davis Detention Home in Galesburg

Eight staff members were injured and transported to a local hospital after being battered by juveniles Wednesday night at Mary Davis Detention Home in Galesburg.

According to a news release from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a fight in progress at the Mary Davis Detention Home, 1319 E. Fifth St., at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday.

Dispatch further advised that at least four juveniles were actively battering staff. Multiple agencies responded, including the Galesburg and Knoxville police departments.

Upon arrival, entry was made and multiple juveniles were secured and returned to their cells. Multiple staff members were injured, and some were transported to the hospital due to their injuries.

The sheriff’s office issued an update Thursday morning, saying, “This incident was initially described as a fight, but quickly morphed into a riot in multiple areas of the facility.”

The interior of the facility also sustained significant damage during the incident.

In total, eight staff members were injured. Two juveniles were treated and released at the facility.

The investigation is on going.
