Galesburg Police often utilize grant funds and other things to do special enforcement details. But it’s not often they tell you almost exactly where they will be doing it.
This time is different. Galesburg Police say thanks to federal traffic enforcement money administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, they and 200 other departments are embarking on special speeding details.
Police say they will be targeting some specific areas: Henderson, Main, and Kellogg Streets, along with parts of U.S. 150 and Interstate 74.
“(Those areas are) where most of our speed-related crashes occur,” said Lt. Bryan Anderson, Galesburg Police, in a news release. “Our goal is to save lives.”
Police will also look for other moving violations on the patrols — such as texting while driving, or those not wearing those seat belts.
“Speeding causes unnecessary danger on our roads,” said Anderson. “Speed greatly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object or an unexpected curve. Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers and other motorists at tremendous risk.”
