Hy-Vee stores pulling back on self-checkout; Option remains for now in Galesburg

A pair of Galesburg grocery stores will at least for now keep their self checkout lanes despite a corporate plan to remove them in some markets.

Hy-Vee spokesperson Nola Aigner Davis said that in recent months, some stores have gotten rid of some or all self checkouts. At other stores, self checkouts have converted to express lanes with a limit of 12 items or less.

Davis tells WGIL that Hy-Vee has not determined a list of which stores will keep or remove self-checkout aisles, but said the two stores in Galesburg still offer the option.

“We want to provide a better customer experience in several of our stores by bringing back the face-to-face interaction with our employees that we had pre-COVID,” Davis said. Retailers like Target and Walmart have already been removing self checkouts across the country for several months so we are not the first to do this.
