‘Tears have been shed.’ Longtime Galesburg gift shop to close at the end of 2024

A longtime Galesburg gift shop that has offered inspirational gifts and books for more than 30 years will close by the end of the year.

Brighter Life, which has operated in Galesburg for 32 years, currently at 72 N. Seminary St., made the announcement Friday.

Mary Spring, who has owned Brighter Life with her husband Ron since 1992, said she plans to retire shortly after Christmas and will close the store.

“This has not been an easy decision to make,” Spring saiid. “Brighter Life is dear to us, as are my employees and our many new and lifelong customers.

“After 32 years, the decision is made, the tears have been shed and probably will be again.”

Going out of business sales started Friday, and will vary until the end of the year, according to Spring.

Brighter Life opened in 1986 by Lois Hendrix. Originally located on North Henderson Street, the store moved to 292 E. Simmons St. in 2009 and to its current location at 72 N. Seminary St. in 2021.
