Galesburg firefighters battle Thursday morning blaze in Downtown Galesburg

Galesburg Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 179 N. Cherry St. at approximately 3:18 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, heavy flames could be seen at the structure.

A fire caused extensive damage to a vacant downtown Galesburg structure at Water and Cherry streets early Thursday morning.

Galesburg Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 179 N. Cherry St. at approximately 3:18 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, heavy flames could be seen at the structure.

Firefighters, battling high winds and temperatures near 10 degrees, were still extinguishing the fire at 8 a.m. Thursday.

The vacant building was the former site of businesses such as Tucker’s Printing and Ray’s Hobby Shop. The building previously suffered extensive fire damage on Nov. 23, 2020.
