A significant increase in the number of respiratory illnesses affecting both students and staff has caused a Galesburg school to cancel classes.
Costa Catholic Academy notified parents on Thursday that it was canceling school on Friday due to a rise in illness.
In an email to parents, Julie Hampton Purl, Lead Teacher/Manager of Administrative Operations at Costa wrote, “This week, we have observed a concerning number of cases of respiratory illnesses, which are impacting attendance and disrupting our learning environment.
“We have taken extra measures to sanitize our school building over the past two weeks and will continue to do so. In the meantime, we ask that you encourage your child(ren) to rest and recover at home.”
With schools observing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, classes would resume at Costa on Tuesday.
John Asplund, District 205 superintendent of schools, tells WGIL there has been “a significantly higher rate” of absences at Galesburg schools this week, but not to the point it would have to call off school.
