Mavis Lynn Sanders, 84, of Galesburg, died Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
She was born in Macomb, Illinois, on June 5, 1940, the daughter of Loren H. and Hattie Mae (Stoneking) Friday. Mavis worked as a rehab aide at St. Mary’s Square for 27 years before retiring in 2005.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Robin and Lori; five granddaughters: Nevaeh, Gabrielle, Shyanne, Brittany, and Kayla; one special grandson, Shane; five great grandchildren: little Shane, Mylee, Charlee’ Bay, Senna, and Leo; three cousins: Jerry, Laura, and Beverly; and her beloved cat, Stewie. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Randy and Russell; two sisters, Delores and Elaine; and her beloved cat, Charlie.
Mavis was an extraordinary woman. A shining example of strength, independence, and unwavering dedication, who inspired countless lives through her remarkable journey. She never once complained, even when her body was weak, but her spirit remained unbroken. Mavis selflessly devoted her life to her daughters and grandchildren, instilling in them the values of resilience, compassion, and kindness. She was the embodiment of motherly love, a grandmother’s wisdom, and a friend’s wavering support, cherished by all who were blessed to know her. Radiating warmth and joy, her heart was a boundless ocean of gold filled with empathy, generosity, and love. She was a beacon of hope, a guiding light, who inspired her family to face life’s challenges with courage, confidence, and faith. If her family had to choose a role model, she would be the one time and again. She was fearless, a true warrior, who taught them to stand tall, to believe in themselves, and to never give up.
Mavis found solace in stress-free coloring, leisurely walks, spending time with her grandchildren and people watching from her porch. Due to her protective nature, she sometimes had the habit of cursing like a sailor but always meant well. Mavis also participated in her neighborhood watch. Her legacy will continue to inspire, motivate, and up lift those left to cherish her memory. Mavis will be forever etched in our hearts. A constant reminder of the transformative power of love, kindness, and compassion. A shining star in the hearts of all those she touched; she will live on.
Cremation will be accorded. Private family graveside services will be at a later date at East Linwood Cemetery Scattering Gardens in Galesburg.
