Dave Hasley: 49 years of officiating Illinois basketball

In this episode of Galesburg In Focus, WGIL’s Jay Redfern sits down with veteran sports official Dave Hasley, who is wrapping up an impressive 49-year career in basketball officiating.

An Abingdon native, Hasley reflects on the evolution of the game, discussing significant changes such as the introduction of the 3-point shot and the upcoming shot clock. With nearly 9,000 games officiated across various sports, he speaks on the importance of mentorship, recalling how he was inspired by local officials early in his career.

The conversation touches on the challenges facing officiating today, including a declining number of officials and the need for new recruits.

During a rapid fire round, Hasley answers what is the most difficult play to call in basketball, what is the most misunderstood rule in basketball, the best atmosphere for high school hoops and much more.
