Mistakes by an inexperienced Galesburg Football team helped Dunlap come away from the home opener at Van Dyke Field with a 17-14 win over the Silver Streaks. The Eagles scored on the second play from scrimmage, a 69yd touchdown run by Hunter Mitchell, to take an early 7-0 lead over Galesburg. The Streaks cam back with a 52yd touchdown run by DeAndre Moren to tie the game at 7, but then right before halftime Galesburg muffed a punt, Dunlap recovered on downs inside the 20yd line but despite no time outs remaining, Dunlap was able to score in those final 40 seconds on a 2yd touchdown pass from quarterback Harlen Mitchell to Charlie Mangeri and that gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead at halftime. A 67yd catch and run from Jacob Ross to Moren helped the Streaks tie the game at 14, and then the Streaks could have taken a lead in the 4th quarter but missed a 22yd field goal. Dunlap came back and hit a wind aided 40yd field goal with just over 4 1/2 minutes left in the game and that ended up being the difference 17-14. Silver Streaks freshman were winners 28-14 in the opening game, and the sophomores will play at Dunlap tomorrow (8/29), meanwhile the varsity gets ready to head to LaSalle Peru next week after the Cavaliers, despite going winless last year, opened with a 28-14 win over United Township tonight (8/28). Kick-off time is set for 7:30pm with a pregame of 7:06pm with play by play from Brad Bennewitz and Jim Lee on 93.7FM and 1400Am WGIL, WGIL.com, or the TuneIn app!
