John Thiel Gym hosted a Western Big 6 match-up Friday night between the Galesburg Silver Streaks and the team ranked 12th in the state, the Moline Maroons. The Streaks were in the battle until about 2-1/2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter when turnovers and missed opportunities expanded the points gap beyond the point of no return. Moline went on to win, 76 - 48, but the game was a much better effort for the Silver Streaks than their first meeting this season with the Maroons. Galesburg is now 8 - 20 on the season and 2 - 9 in the Western Big 6, while Moline improves to 9 - 2 and continues their efforts to chase down Quincy for the season conference title.
The Silver Streaks shot 20 of 42 from the field, 4 of 14 from 3-point range, and 4 of 7 from the free-throw line. The team grabbed 25 rebounds and 9 assists, but hurt themselves badly with 22 turnovers in the game. Moline had 4 players scoring in double figures, while Jaxon Wyatt was the only Silver Streak to score double figures with 19. Keigen Crummer scored 8 points, all in the 1st half, while Leslie Kelley finished with 7, Rahkim McCellan scored 4 points, and Demetrius Watson hit a 3-pointer in the 4th quarter.
Playing a strong, confident game, and much improved from the last meeting with the Maroons, Jaxon Wyatt was named the Dave's Auto Body Crunch Time Player of the Game. He had tough match-ups all night against Moline's Trey Taylor and Braden Freeman, and Jaxon stood his ground and played strong. Jaxon finished with 19 points, going 8 of 11 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free throw line, while grabbing 5 rebounds.
