Project 350, an initiative to plant more trees all around Galesburg, has significantly exceeded its initial goals thanks to community volunteers and collaboration with the parks department.
The program focuses on planting diverse tree species in city parks, commercial areas, and residential terraces (with homeowner watering responsibility), aiming to enhance the aesthetic appeal, environmental benefits, and overall well-being of Galesburg.
Tom Simkins, special projects coordinator for the City of Galesburg, joined WGIL's Tyler Gumm and Jay Redfern on Galesburg's Morning News to discuss some upcoming planting events, with a focus on expanding tree coverage in underserved and high-profile areas of the city, including downtown.
Individuals interested in volunteering can call or text Tom Simkins at (309) 299-6959, or provide their email to be added to the community volunteer list.
The first planting day will get underway at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3 at at Lancaster Park which is in the far southwest area of town (see map below). Take Monmouth Blvd west to Glenn's Radiator at Lancaster St, turn left (south) and go a couple blocks to the small park. The group will also plant on West Third Street near Holton Street, and at Arlington Park at Seminary and South streets.
