What is GAVC? Preparing students for successful careers in high-demand fields

Adam Seaney, director of the Galesburg Area Vocational Center, joined WGIL's Tyler Gumm and Jay Redfern on Galesburg's Morning News.

Seaney discusses the center's mission as a key hub for Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the region, serving students from various high schools in Knox, Warren, and Henderson counties. With about 14 programs available, ranging from one to two years, the center has seen significant growth in enrollment, jumping from 352 last year to around 425 this year.

He highlights the increasing recognition of vocational education as a viable path for students, emphasizing that not every career requires a college degree. Popular programs like Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and welding have seen long waitlists due to high demand. GAVC, established in the 1950s, has transitioned into a modern facility that offers state-of-the-art equipment and teaching methods tailored to industry needs.

In addition to discussing the center's history and facilities, Seaney explains the variety of programs available, including automotive, culinary arts, law enforcement and drone operations.

Looking forward, Seaney shares upcoming events, including a trades talk featuring local employers and a healthcare careers showcase designed to connect students with potential job opportunities.
